「SVO＋that節」の型をとれる動詞
I can assure you that he is sincere. （＝I can assure you of his sincerity.）（彼が誠実なことは保証するよ。）
I convinced her that he was sincere. （＝I convinced her of his sincerity.）（彼女に彼が誠実なことを確信させた。）
assureとconvinceはいずれも，「SVO＋that節」の型をとれる動詞です。同様のものには，advise，inform，notify，persuade，tellなどがあります。
「SVO＋that節」の型をとれない動詞
一方，「SVO＋that節」の型をとれそうでとれない動詞もあるので注意が必要です。例えばI suggested him that…は不可で，I suggested to him that…とします。同様の動詞に，explainやproposeなどがあります。
例1：I suggested to him that he should be president.
例2：I explained to them that we could stay no longer.
※ちなみに，I suggested George for president, and they all agreed.（ジョージを会長にしようと提案したら，みな賛成した。）は可です。つまり，suggestは人を目的語にすることができない，ということではありません。「suggest＋人＋that節」が不可（「suggest＋to 人＋that節」なら可），ということです。
上に述べたように，「SVO＋that節」の型をとれる動詞，とれない動詞の区別はTOEICでしばしば問われます。基礎体力をつける走り込みや筋トレのつもりでこまめに辞典を引いて，語法にできるだけ詳しくなっておきたいものです。
